Toroidal transformers are becoming more popular due to their improved magnetic properties. The toroidal (doughnut) shape has the advantage of minimizing the amount of magnetic flux that escapes outside the core (leakage flux). Thus resulting in less electromagnetic interference (EMI) to nearby circuits or equipment. In today's low-power, high-frequency electronics, EMI is becoming increasingly important.
Toroid transformers can be made with a lower profile than a standard solenoid core transformer, allowing for lower profile equipment with comparable power.
