Description
The IEC Wilson's Cloud Chamber Expansion Type demonstrates particle ionization and condensation. Alcohol saturates a pad in the chamber, and a vacuum pump (reversed tire pump) creates a partial vacuum to supersaturate the air with alcohol vapor. An Alpha "pin source" emits particles that ionize the air along their paths. The alcohol vapor condenses on these ionized paths, forming visible foggy tracks that trace the particles' movement.
A light source, such as a microscope lamp, is needed to illuminate the chamber. Also an Alpha "pin source" is required. A modernized and cost-reduced version is planned for future development.
