Your Guide to Home Security Systems: Parts, Types, and Features

August 26, 2022

Security Cameras Collage - 3 different cameras, dome, Wi-fi and bullet

Times have changed, and locking doors and windows are not enough for full home protection. Luckily, home security systems continue to improve, providing higher and smarter security.

There are various devices to choose from, and the options can be overwhelming. If you are still figuring out which one is right for you, this guide has got you covered.

Keep reading to learn what home security systems are, including:

  • The parts of a home security system
  • The different types and their functions
  • Features to look for

Home Security Systems Explained

All home security systems work on the key principle of securing entry points and interior spaces. The only difference is in the number of devices employed throughout the home.

A home security system consists of electronic components that work together for surveillance. Each of the elements teams up with a central control panel, keeping a home as safe as possible.

Standard home security systems usually includes sensors, control panels, cameras, and more. Together, these components ensure every nook and canny of your home is protected.

Parts of a Home Security System

A typical home security system includes the following:

1. Sensors

Placed both in and out of the home, sensors will alert the system’s central control panel when breached. That control panel will then sound an alarm, alerting the homeowner, a.k.a. you.

Motion sensors detect motion, so they should be placed in a main entryway or hallway on the ground floor of a home. Some units are sensitive to pets, meaning they stay silent when dogs or cats walk by.

Entry or contact sensors have two parts: one on the window or door and another on the frame. They use magnets to determine when one of these entrances is opened or closed. If the sensor thinks an entry point is opened, it provides an alert.

2. Control panels

Control panels act as the central point of command. Authorised people, such as homeowners, can use the control panel to arm or disarm an alarm.

To do so, you will usually need a passcode or voice command for arming and disarming.

3. High-decibel alarm

Loud enough for neighbours to hear, home security alarms serve different purposes. With a high-decibel alarm, the system can alert everyone in your home in case of an emergency.

Most importantly, the alarm sound is shrill enough to send a burglar running. At the same time, notifying nearby neighbours of the situation.

4. Surveillance cameras

Surveillance cameras come in both wired and wireless configurations. They can be used in several ways as part of an overall home security system.

Moreover, they can be accessed remotely on computers, smartphones, and tablets. If you are out of town, you can check your kid’s arrival after school or watch for deliveries through your phone.

Even better, CCTVs can record any security breaches, giving you footage of a home invasion. Other monitoring includes:

  • Hard to see or distant areas of your property
  • Remote buildings like garages, barns, and workshops
  • Entry points, both exterior and interior, such as garage doors and front doors

5. Floodlights

Floodlights work like motion sensors, except they don’t cause an alarm when triggered. Instead, they turn on and flood the area with light, hence the name.

Floodlights will alert you and give you a good view of what’s going on outside. And if there is an intruder, the lights may scare them off, signalling that you are home.

Types of Home Security Systems

Listed below are the few major types of home security systems:

1. DIY or self-monitored

With a DIY home security system, you put together and monitor the system yourself. But some can have professional monitoring, so the categories are not mutually exclusive.

A self-monitored system usually includes motion sensors, door sensors, CCTVs and sirens. These can alert you through text or call on your smartphone when triggered.

2. Professional

This type of home security system can mean two things: 1.) It is professionally installed. 2.) A team of people responds to alerts = professional monitoring.

If the system is breached, it notifies the company to respond. A security expert may then communicate with you to determine the next steps.

But like DIY, a professional home security system can also be self-monitored.

3. Wired

Here, sensors and other parts are connected to the central control panel by wires. Hardwired systems are reliable as they won’t give in to any interferences or network outages.

If managed by a professional, the company will use phone lines to communicate with you after a breach.

4. Wireless

As the name suggests, it does not have wires and instead relies on WiFi or cellular backup. Components in a wireless security system use WiFi, for one, to communicate with the control panel.

The system essentially creates a small network that uses radio waves, not wires. Then it sends notifications to you or the managing security company.

Wireless security systems are easier to install compared to their wired counterparts. They are also easy to upgrade, allowing you to add devices when needed.

While some are fully wireless, relying on battery power, the majority of wireless systems use wireless communication but are still wired to a power source. This ensures better reliability as you do not have to worry about batteries running out.

5. Smart

Smart security systems are connected to the Internet. This allows you to view live footage from your mobile app. Plus, to receive notifications when alarms go off and to control the system remotely.

Other Features to Look For

The following equipment and features can be found in standard home security systems. But some providers bundle devices differently. Thus, it is important to keep your priorities in mind to make your investment worthwhile.

1. Video doorbell

A video doorbell records who stops by your front step. It also lets you speak with them remotely through your smartphone or tablet. You can provide information to a delivery person or welcome guest. Or you can shoo-away unwelcome visitors.

2. Nanny camera

Nanny cameras watch over kids’ rooms and even the caretaker. You can use it to catch up with the babysitter, help ageing parents, and watch pets while you are away.

3. Panic pendant

This component provides a wearable shortcut to emergency services. Older people or those with disabilities can use panic alarms in case of an emergency.

This will especially come in handy when they need help ASAP, and no one is around.

4. Glass break sensor

Glass break sensors will send alerts with loud noises when glass has been broken. This triggers an alarm, scaring off intruders who have broken the windows.

5. Smart home integration

This allows your security system and smart home devices to team up. The result is promising – more convenient control options from a single app!

Use smart home integration to add voice control to your system. Also, create custom automation routines to help your smart home system run smoother.

6. Two-way talk

Two-way audio turns a device into an intercom you can speak and listen through. Use it to check on the kids, get the dog off the couch, speak to visitors, or catch intruders.

7. Carbon monoxide detector

CO detectors activate an alarm when sensing carbon monoxide in your home. It can save lives and send alerts when you and your family are asleep and out away from home.

8. Flood and freeze sensors

Flood sensors alert you of leaks and pooling water. In contrast, freeze sensors alert you of severe temperature drops.

9. Fire and smoke alarms

Fire and smoke alarms can alert you to fire, smoke, and severe heat. They are always great to have at home, helping prevent fires.
