Personal Safety Devices and Tips That Could Save Your Life
March 10, 2021
Do you feel uncomfortable whenever you are in unfamiliar surroundings or neighbourhoods at night? Perhaps when you are travelling abroad?
With the potential dangers around us, personal safety concerns have become part of our everyday lives. While we hope to never need them, having personal safety devices on hand is something that we should always consider, especially with how we often react subconsciously to protect ourselves from harm.
Personal Safety Tips
Whether you are in the workplace, around campus grounds, a foreign neighbourhood, or even in your vehicle, to name a few—personal safety tips revolve around the basic rule of proactive and preventative thinking.
Below is a list of effective safety tips that can help you be prepared and stay one step ahead of the game, courtesy of the Community College of Baltimore County.
Workplace
- Even if you plan to go out just for a minute, it’s best to lock your office door whenever you leave.
- Be aware of the fire alarms and emergency exits. Know the workplace fire prevention regulations.
- Don’t leave your keys and other belongings unattended.
University/School Grounds
- Avoid taking shortcuts through isolated areas as much as possible.
- Don’t go for a walk alone, especially after dark.
- Whether you are walking, jogging or running around the campus at night, make sure to wear reflective clothing and go in the opposite direction of traffic.
Personal Property
- Never leave your bag, wallet or purse, and other personal belonging unattended.
- Don’t leave your wallet, jewellery, or gadgets in open view.
- Don’t keep large sums of money in your office, classroom or backpack.
In Your Vehicle
- Have your keys ready when approaching your vehicle. Then check for intruders before coming in, lock the door immediately once you get into your car.
- Always consider closing all your windows and locking the doors when leaving your vehicle, whether it’s for a few minutes or several hours.
- Lock your boot, especially if you keep valuable items there.
- Find a well-lighted area when parking at night.
- Keep your tank at least half full as much as possible.
- Do not attach your name or other identification, including your license plate number, to your keyring.
- If your vehicle breaks down in an isolated area, raise the hood, lock the doors, call roadside assistance and stay inside. If someone stops to help, do not exit the vehicle. Ask them to call for assistance if you haven’t been able to and sound the horn if you feel threatened.
- Never pick up a hitchhiker or hitchhike yourself.
Depending on the situation, you may find yourself in a complicated circumstance where defending yourself physically or calling for help may not be easy. This is where personal safety devices come in handy.
Personal Safety Devices
There are various options available on the market, and when it comes to choosing the right device for your protection, it all depends on what your needs are including how big or small you want the device to be.
Personal Alarm
When you find yourself in a complex situation, you may not be able to scream or alert anyone nearby that you need help. This is where a personal alarm device comes in handy—with just a click of a button or pull of a chain, it can alert everyone that you are in danger.
Most personal alarms feature a one-click light that illuminates the area. They can be easily attached to a keychain or purse so you can bring them wherever you go.
You can get your personal alarm here at Wiltronics with this Red Mini Personal Siren Alarm (no longer available) that features a 100Db loud siren and an LED torchlight. This mini alarm is best to attach to a handbag, backpack, or keychain.
Simply pull the keychain when in threatening or vulnerable situations to activate the powerful 100dB siren alarm. Re-insert the pin to turn-off.
We also offer this Dual Siren Alarm Keychain with LED Torch (no longer available), an ideal companion and solution to vulnerable or threatening situations. It features a dual siren personal alarm with a 130dB siren to deter thieves and attackers, and a powerful independent torch function that will strobe when the alarm is activated.
